The Alternative Travel Magazine – Cereal

When most of us think of travel magazines, our minds flick to images of that classy oceanfront resort, the restaurant with panoramic views and hammocks on a serene beach. We all love to dream of beautiful destinations and checking in to a room with a view. Discovering the world through the eyes of Conde Naste and the Lonely Planet help our destination bucket list grow by each turn of a page.

It seems more and more, people want to gain real and honest perceptions of unknown, off the beaten track locations. Glossy pages with promises of water-bungalows and high-tea are being nudged to the side by more alternative indie mags, which are a far cry from the mainstream types.

If you haven’t already discovered it, let me introduce you to very different, modern and original travel magazine – Cereal. I love reading their original content paired with such beautiful, unique photography. It’s great to learn about new places through the eyes of someone who might give you a completely different perspective.

When I eventually have my own coffee table, I know the first thing I’ll keep to read and have on display. 🙂

I used to be a big time cereal addict (ok realising there probably could be worse things out there!), so a magazine titled cereal was intriguing, especially with articles titled ‘honey’ and ‘grains.’ I wondered why they chose this name.

Bristol’s Rosa Park and art director Rich Stapleton started cereal in 2012, as a quarterly travel and lifestyle magazine, complete with stunning, clean photography and interesting articles. Six issues are now out, with the sixth just released.  I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

The layout is seriously minimalistic. All white-washed and simple. When I read there first issue on a scientific food lab in Copenhagen, and an article on cereal milk (who doesn’t love the last few sips of ‘sugar-kissed’ cereal milk?), I felt compelled to share my new find!

They include a great variety of less popular city destinations such as Seoul and Helsinki, as well as interesting food stories, people, clothes and architecture.

Check out their Instagrams too @cerealmag and @guidedbycereal. Their photographs are gorgeous, it’s no wonder they have such a huge following.

They’re a wonderful alternative to the more usual travel destination guides. I very much recommend having a peek yourself!
