Fortnum & Mason’s Afternoon Tea

I’m a big fan of dressing up for brunch or lunch. Or breakfast and dinner really. Anyhow. Having beautiful food and cocktails throughout the afternoon, while wearing your smartest outfit and heels. And all before dinner? Yes please.

This pretty much sums up an afternoon tea experience at Fortnum and Mason. It’s delightfully British and pretty special.

I was feeling all giggly and excited as we rushed over from Green Park, eagerly making our way up the lifts to the top floor of it’s grand, old, Victorian building. (I had just gone for a long run through London so was feeling pretty ravenous by this point).

As soon as we stepped out the lift, it was as if the the bustling chatter and noise from downstairs had reduced to a calm, soothing air of elegance. Definitely not the place for giggles and too much excitement.

I tried to contain myself while perusing the light and spacious ‘tea salon,’ happily soaking up it’s ambiance.

Everyone was flawlessly dressed and sophisticated, sipping on their colour-coordinated china tea-sets.

My favourite colour is turquoise, so I was already in love with the place when I saw every piece of gold-rimmed china was turquoise-themed.

I chose Fortnum’s Savoury Afternoon Tea from the many different options. I was intrigued to try a savoury-only take on scones, instead of the traditional kind paired with jam and cream.

Just have a look at the menu, it’s a good one! And all for only £44 per person!

Overall everything was utterly delicious, and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t just because I was starving and ready to eat just about anything remotely edible.

First were the finger sandwiches. The Fortnums Smoked Salmon with Horsereradish Cream was by far my favourite.

Nestled in there was also Cucumber with Cream Cheese, Chicken & Sweetcorn, Rare Roast Beef with Cafe de Paris Butter and finally Rare Breed Hen Egg with Mustard Cress.

I was pretty envious of my brothers crab though. It looked and tasted a-mazing.

The best part was the elegant tier of Scones and Savouries.

Here we have Lemon & Dill Scones with Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese, Pea & Mint Scones with Bayonne Ham in the middle.

At the top there is Leek & Bacon Tart with Thyme Oeuf Drumkilbo (mouth-wateringly tasty) as well as Chicken Liver & Foie Grois Shortbread, Strawberry and Rhubarb.

As always with family meal occasions, we were constantly passing each others plates back and forth, forks with the perfect mouthfuls criss-crossed over the table in to each others eager mouths.

Having suitably stuffed myself with fantastic food, the waiter pointed over to a huge cart full of every kind of perfectly-moist and icing-covered cake you could imagine. He said we could have as many pieces as we wanted.

Even though wobbling over to the bathrooms was an effort, I couldn’t resist his offer and tucked in to a few more slices.

There’s always room for dessert :).
