To continue with the Japanese fine-dining theme I have taken on, I decided to book a table at the decadent Matsuhisa in the Belvedere Hotel, Mykonos. This is another one of chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s ‘New Style Japanese Cuisine’ restaurants.
Just the same as Nobu (perhaps you’re familiar with these popular restaurants dotted around the world), Matsuhisa is where you go for a bit of a luxurious dining experience and celebrity spotting. I just loved the well-designed lighting. It creates such a picturesque and fairy-like atmosphere. I was mentally noting down ideas for my future home-garden the whole time :).
We decided against getting the ‘1st timer tasting menu’ and opted for the ‘regular diners tasting menu’ which didn’t include the renowned Black Cod with Miso and New Style Sashimi dishes. This was a rather big decision seeing as the legendary Black Cod is one of my favourite dishes to eat, but we thought we’d go for something different.
There isn’t a set menu for this 7 course feast, the chefs decide it on the day depending on what fresh food they get from the nearby Aegean. I liked this element of surprise, making the whole experience more special.
The only thing I knew for certain were of course the cocktails, so let’s start with these little beauties.
To start, we had a very fresh dish of Tuna Tartare, presented in a bowl of ice. We were told to wait and eat the little piece of fruit on the side until the end, to cleanse our palate.
Next were 3 lovely little dishes of Salmon Karashi Su Miso, Sweet Shrimp and New Style Whitefish with Dry Miso flakes on top. The dry miso flakes created an interesting flavour for the fish, however the Sweet Shrimp in the middle was my favourite by far.
Then we had a light Sashimi Salad. It’s all about the sauce here, and surprising how wonderful plain greens can taste dipped in to it! This was served with delicious tasting crab, yellow tail and tuna.
The following dish was the best of all. Botan Ebi and Scallops in a Sweet Sour Sauce. These were paired perfectly with crunchy asparagus.
As we waited for the next dish we were happily entertained watching the chefs work their magic.
After giving our stomachs a little bit of time to settle, we feasted our eyes on the most plump, juicy and tender piece of beef I have ever tasted! Hello Beef Balsamic Ginger Teriyaki.
I finished every last piece, and so badly wanted to lick the plate clean after. (Don’t worry I did manage to refrain myself).
We were then given Seafood Miso Soup with a dish of beautifully laid out Sushi.
The sushi consisted of yellow tail, tuna, squid, salmon and eel. The eel was mouth-wateringly good. I just wish I had a whole dish of eel sushi only and skipped the others.
To top off this marvellous meal, we were given a dessert of Coconut Panna Cotta. It was light, delicately sweet and served in a cute, little cup. The biscuity-base at the bottom was a very pleasant surprise too. I just wish the cup was bigger!
All gone.
My passion fruit cocktail was also worth a photo :).
The meal wasn’t cheap, and actually more expensive than Nobu or Roka in London. I still recommend a visit regardless, the decor and outdoor dining is something you just don’t get in London.
Have you ever been to Matsuhisa? What did you think of it?

All of it looks insane. I wish I was rich.
Looking at your pictures I became hungry 🙂 The food looks so good.
Thank you! 🙂
Do you have any other recommendations for restaurants/bars? I will be with a group of friends in Mykonos at the end of June.
Yes Nammos beach bar and restaurant on Psarou beach is gorgeous! Lots of fresh seafood. A more rustic, budget friendly one is Nikos Tavern which is also popular. Have fun!
Great! Thank you for the tips!
Do you have any information on the lighting in the restaurant?
Thanks.
