After an incredible time on El Nido, our next stop was Coron Town on the island of Busuanga (also in the province of Palawan).
Coron is the main town on the island for diving the world famous WW2 ship wrecks (read all about my Shipwreck diving in Coron Bay). Not to get confused, there’s also a small island nearby called Coron, home to gorgeous beaches and lakes.
Our journey from El Nido was an experience. We decided to brave it and took a very basic bangka boat, which took about 6 fairly bumpy hours. We chose the largest boat (not very large) and clung on for the journey across open sea, packed with many other tourists eager to get to Coron Town.
There are actually a few horror stories circling around from bangka boats that have completely sunk at sea.. luggage flooded.. journeys that took over 12 hours.. If you decide to travel this way, make sure it is safe and you’ve had a look at the boat you’ll be taking first. I found it pretty amusing though that the fastest wifi I had received for the past week was on the actual bangka boat!
Once we arrived, we gratefully stretched our wobbly legs before hunting for a tricycle to take us to our hotel.
We stayed at Sea Dive Resort – an ideal resort at the centre of Coron Town, overlooking the ocean and home to a great dive centre.
The rooms are very basic, about Php800 for a large, aircon room on the top floor. Of Php600 for a fan room below. The sunset views were breathtaking. The restaurant at Sea Dive is one of the most popular amongst tourists in the whole town. With a view like this it’s really no surprise. Also the menu is very extensive, with various Asian as well as International dishes.
There was also a great selection of delicious smoothies and shakes. And if you’re feeling like something with a bit more of a kick, there’s a lively bar next door called Helldivers bar. It was full of character, with a pool table, TV and some interesting historical pieces from the shipwrecks on display.
There isn’t much to see in the town itself. I wouldn’t necessarily come here if it wasn’t for the fantastic diving. And if you’re a confident diver, it CANNOT be missed.
I had a great time anyhow discovering new, tasty Philippino dishes. The seafood in Coron was wonderful, lots of fresh crab, lobster and squid. I was in seafood heaven!
Stick to the fresh seafood though and not the street food burgers…
I took a photo of the menu in one of the restaurants so I wouldn’t forget the names of the local dishes. I’m terrible at remembering names, so just take photos of all the signs and menus instead.
Pork or chicken adobo is one of the most popular dishes in the Philippines. The meat is marinated in vinegar and soy sauce, paired with garlic rice and egg. It was my favourite meal, I had it almost every day for breakfast 😊.
You can never have enough calamari right? I have a serious addiction.
This stuffed lobster dish was rather heavy but still pretty delicious.
Another great restaurant to check out is La Sirenetta, also overlooking the ocean and right next to Sea Dive resort. The seafood was excellent, with a good pick of cocktails too.
Feeling full and content, we headed back for a good nights sleep, ready for our first shipwreck dive adventure.
