After a hectic time at work studying for my promotion – sitting through 7 interviews and presenting my final project – I was very ready for a holiday. The moment I passed, I immediately booked a plane ticket to Marrakech to celebrate.
I quickly searched through one of my favourite hotel booking websites Tablet, and found a gorgeous looking riad (private home) centrally located in the old city of Marrakech, called Dar Warda.
Unfortunately we arrived late at night, where we skeptically walked through a quiet, dark alley led by an enthusiastic boy. He was determined to help us find Dar Warda, eagerly persuading us we were going in the right direction. Wild cats scattering in all directions as we crept further down, through low hung archways and gleaming spider webs. We were about to stop and turn back, convinced we were completely lost, when the boy grinned happily and pointed to a thick, old wooden door.
Almost immediately the door creaked open and we were greeted by our host, who took us into the most charming, elegant and peaceful home.
Dar Warda is the home of such a warm and friendly family. There are only 4 individually styled rooms on two levels, surrounding the fountain-centred courtyard.
We were given delicious, sweet mint tea and biscuits which made for a painless and relaxed check-in experience.
The design of the courtyard was perfect with it’s deep, red coloured walls and rustic moroccan-style furniture. The noise contrast as soon as you step through the wooden doors was like stepping into a secret, tranquil oasis.
I didn’t realise at this point but most of the ‘hotels’ and homes in Marrakech are just like Dar Warda – a little slice of paradise tucked behind the bustling streets of the city.
The interior design of our room was even more wonderful. Rich greens, deep blues, pink and gold. There was a lot of colour, but it all just worked. I’d love to re-create the old, rustic texture of the walls for my future house one day!
It was clear that each item of furniture was thoughtfully placed. I loved the coloured tiles and the mix of modern and antique furniture, all tied together in traditional moroccan style.
I thoroughly recommend staying at Dar Warda if you’re planning a trip to the old city of Marrakech. The intimate home within the Medina was such an ideal escape after a day exploring the busy city.
Although we didn’t eat here, we heard fantastic reviews of the restaurant. There’s also a rooftop terrace for evening sundowners!
See Dar Warda’s website here.
It looks like a really unique and cool place to stay!
I love this. I’ve been wanting to go to Morocco for quite a while and as North Africa is a no-no at the moment, it’s nevertheless, good to read about cool stuff for when the time is right LOL!
Thanks for sharing!
